BF Homes Parañaque paid a great contribution to the modernization and civilization of southern Metro Manila. Its history of how it came to be reflects the community’s affluent reputation.
The person behind the development of Barangay BF Homes is Tomas Aguirre. It was a project of his former company known as Banco Filipino Savings and Mortgage Bank or simply Banco Filipino. During 1966, Banco Filipino became a renowned bank in the country. This bank was made possible by the family’s other successful business called, Agencia de Empeños de Aguirre Pawnshop that was established in 1964.
In 1968, only two years after Banco Filipino became one of the leading banks, Aguirre considered land development which resulted in the rise of BF Homes Incorporated (BHFI). Due to the help of a visionary mindset, Aguirre had a desire for an ideal suburban community in the south — distant from the city noises of Manila but not too far from it, making work and school still accessible.
His family business fortunes allowed him to invest on 765 hectares of agricultural land across Parañaque city and some parts of adjoining cities of Las Piñas and Muntinlupa. These three cities back then were considered municipalities of Rizal. It was until in 1975 when they became incorporated into Metro Manila.
In 1978, BF Homes became fully operational and its popularity was reaching a peak it has never seen before. Since it was spread across three cities, the area in Parañaque with parts of Muntinlupa was labeled “Parañaque BF Homes” and the one in Las Piñas was “Las Piñas BF Homes”. Currently, Barangay BF Homes is the largest barangay in the Philippines.
Unfortunately, sometime in 1985, Tomas Aguirre lost his favor from the president of the country at the time — Ferdinand Marcos which led to the tribulation of BF Homes Incorporated. Forwarding to March 1989, the management of BF Homes was then transferred from BFHI to the residents, professionally known as the United BF Homeowners Association Incorporated. In spite of this change in management, BFHI still retained its shares in the subdivision. However, this created several splits within the vicinity which explains the current division of some streets.
Parañaque BF Homes is one of the few “self-contained” subdivisions for its various amenities like schools, churches, police station, fire station, supermarkets, a gas station, etc. Allowing the locals to avoid the struggle of traveling to a city far away to find what they need.
Not to mention its close proximity to other cities like Las Piñas and Muntinlupa. It even became the first gated upper middle class subdivision to have its own movie house with a bowling alley. Anyone familiar to the area appreciates the wide selection of places to go to and the security it provides being a gated community.
Victoria Street was named after their daughter while Gilmore was after General Eugene Allen Gilmore – 1920’s acting Governor-General of the Philippines.
When World War II finally comes to an end, New Manila became a well-known residential area where the late Manuel Quezon even set his family’s mansion.
In 1937, New Manila was known to be the “Hollywood of the Philippines.” Sampaguita Pictures, one of the first companies producing original Filipino films, set their first studio. While LVN Pictures, Sampaguita’s rival, put theirs in Cubao letting New Manila to be the home of some famous artists including Pilita Corales.
Locals and even people that are not from the south agree that there is a certain type of charm to this area.
The Aguirre Avenue has become a famous local food hub with plenty of dining and drinking establishments. The place’s laid back culture is what makes it pleasant as well. Most people just dress in casual clothing or even with flip flops creating a calm atmosphere that isn’t hostile.
